Pioneers of Wheatgrass

Charles Franklin Schnabel 1895-1974

“The new way to feed people is to grow and process 40% protein grass. Grass is the cheapest commercial source of vitamins and minerals in the world for either man or animals. High protein grass production will build up the land faster and at the same time pay larger net profits than any other crop that can be grown. Hunger need not be. A way has been found to banish starvation from the earth. It can be done with a fraction of the land cultivation . No new frontiers are needed. Every nation now can produce the food it needs—Charles F. Schnabel

He was the first in his field to make some great discoveries about wheatgrass .

He was an American agricultural chemist who discovered in 1931 that wheat, oats, rye and barley grasses reached their nutritional peak at or just prior to the commencement of the jointing stage.

He knew from his work with his farm animals and his research in the laboratory that wheatgrass boosts nutrition, builds good blood and strengthens immunity.

In the early 1940's, you could buy "tins" of Schnabel's dry grass powder in pharmacies all across North America.

Schnabel started a movement that made grasses available for both livestock and human consumption.

Victor Earl Irons 1894—1993

“A vitamin means a life amino acid. Today the vitamin business is a multi billion dollar industry and our health has steadily worsened . So what good are dead vitamins? Think it over! Only life begets life! Only Life supports Life and only live vitamins will save us . Such is green life”—

V.E. Irons was one of the original pioneers for the Natural Foods Industry. He is Known for his belief in bowel cleansing. Irons became interested in health as he suffered from a disease known as Ankylosing Spondylitis. He was so impressed by the healing properties of the Wheatgrass that he brought out one of Schnabel's farm and started growing and packing his own cereal grass products. He named it green life. He died in 1993 at the age of 99. His company is one of the eldest in the nutritional industry and still has offices in Kansas city.

"Bowel problems can cause nutritional deficiency, regardless of how good your diet is or how many vitamins you take." – Victor Earl Irons

Most people are aging because they are walking cesspools. They

are literally rotting and decaying from the inside out." – Victor Earl Irons

Ann Wigmore 1909-1994

“I see a world without sickness…. A world in complete harmony and in perfect physical mental, and spiritual balance by following nature`s  laws of cause and effect.”  - Ann Wigmore

In the 1940`s Ann Wigmore continued to contribute to the popularization of Wheatgrass. As a child she watched and learned from her grandmother the power of natural healing, She helped heal the wounds of World War 1 soldiers with grasses herbs and plants.

During her life she suffered from a terrible car accident and was told that she would have to have her legs amputated as she had caught gangrene and broken in 3 different places. Horrified at the thought she applied the teachings from her grandmother and cured herself by consuming grass from her back garden raw greens, seeds and grains. Two years down the road she was running the Boston Marathon.

She knew she had stumbled across something amazing and made the first juicer for wheatgrass . She helped cure sickness in humans and animals.

In 1958 she founded the Hippocrates Health Institute in Boston. She believed that the body can act as its own physician given the proper tools . “Living food for living people dead food for dead people .”
